What is restaurant insurance?
Restauranteurs know all too well what can happen to an eatery. Having restaurant insurance won’t protect against every risk, but it may financially protect Colorado restaurants from a host of things that can happen.
Restaurant insurance offers coverages that are tailored to the unique needs of dining establishments. Policies usually offer multiple property and liability protections for sit-down eateries.
What eateries in Colorado is a restaurant policy for?
A restaurant policy is something that most sit-down dining establishments in Colorado should have. Not insuring could force an eatery to close if something major happens. More specific examples of eateries that might get this type of policy include:
- Fine dining and upscale restaurants
- Seafood restaurants and steakhouses
- Family-friendly restaurants
- Fast casual restaurants
- All you can eat buffet restaurants
- Coffee houses, bistros and cafes
This type of policy usually isn’t the best choice for other food service businesses that don’t have sit-down dining. For example, food trucks, caterers and bars will all likely find another policy option that’s more specifically tailored to their needs.

“I became a client of the DeLuca Agency when it bought my previous insurance agency. Fortunately, Caula Campbell-Frazier transferred with the company. She has been a delight to work with–always responds quickly, thoroughly and with a real desire to answer questions or assist you. I can’t say enough good things about her. You will not be disappointed.”
“I worked with Caula Campbell to renew my homeowners insurance, she was able to help me by pointing out a gap in my coverage and still was able to lower my premiums. I am enjoying my lower mortgage as a result of the lower escrow. Highly recommend.”
“The agency did a great job on finding better rates for me. The staff is very professional and resourceful. Thanks!”
Spoke with Gloria and she was very knowledge about my insurance needs. She guided me to consider options that are well within my budget and would greatly help my family when needed.
Spoke with Gloria and she was very knowledgeable about my insurance needs. She guided me to consider options that are well within my budget and would greatly help my family when needed.Had a great experience with the DeLuca Agency. We quoted with them one year and decided not to move forward because life got busy. But we decided to try again the next year and we were welcomed back without judgment for not having moved forward previously. The agent (Paige Brown) was very professional and extremely knowledgeable about the various companies, coverage, etc. They are able to cater to high end clients and it shows with their knowledge, thoroughness, and expertise. She spent a good amount of time answering our complex questions and informed us about things we never knew before that go deeper into insurance coverage. They have a nice range of products as well and seem to do what’s best for your unique situation.
Paige with The DeLuca Agency was a great help when I needed insurance recently. Highly recommend.
I have worked with the DeLuca Agency since moving to CO in 2019. Danielle Duffy is amazing and has always helped me out with any and everything I have needed. She goes above and beyond every single time I contact her. Beyond that, she is just an overall pleasant person!
We have been insured through The DeLuca Agency for over 2 years and find their customer service highly responsive. The Staff is extremely professional and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this agency for any of your insurance needs.
What property insurance coverages are available to restaurants?
Restaurant policies can offer a variety of property coverages that may be important to have. Some of the most notable ones are:
- Commercial Building Coverage: Typically insures a restaurant-owned building, along with outdoor seating areas, parking lots and other structures on the property.
- Commercial Contents Coverage: Typically insures items kept at the property that the restaurant owns. For example, this may cover BOH appliances and storage, FOH furniture and POS system, decor, cooking utensils, dishes and much more.
- Tenant’s Betterment Coverage: Typically insures improvements and modifications that a restaurant makes when leasing its space. Often covers both BOH and FOH build-outs.
- Food Contamination Coverage: Typically insures against the potential spoilage of ingredients and prepared meals. This may cover spoilage caused by fire, lightning, power outage or another peril that a policy protects against.
What restaurant liability insurance coverages are available?
These policies likewise can offer multiple restaurant liability insurance coverages. Some that restaurants might want in their policy are:
- General Liability Coverage: Might apply if a customer or vendor is injured during an everyday accident (e.g. slip and fall). Often also covers defamation and false advertising.
- Liquor Liability Coverage: Might apply if an intoxicated customer is involved in a fight, sexual assault or DUI accident, or if they’re hospitalized for alcohol poisoning. Often protects against allegations that the restaurant overserved the customer.
- Product Liability Coverage: Might apply if there a customer becomes ill because the food/drink they were served wasn’t safely prepared. Often also covers choking and other injuries caused by food.
- Umbrella Liability Coverage: Might apply if a lawsuit exceeds the limits of another restaurant liability insurance protection.
Are special events covered by restaurant liability insurance?
Many restaurant policies offer liability coverage for special events, but this may be optional rather than standard. Coverage for special events isn’t guaranteed, however, and sometimes might not be available through a policy.
Restaurants that need coverage for rehearsal dinners, corporate events, fundraisers, holiday gatherings or similar events should work with an insurance agent who knows restaurant liability insurance well. An agent who specializes in these policies should be able to find an option that provides coverage for the events that a restaurant hosts.
How much does it cost to insure a restaurant?
The premiums charged for insuring a restaurant vary. Factors such as location, building size, foods and beverages served, and any recent insurance claims are just some of the details that can impact what a restaurant pays.
To find out how much insurance will cost for a specific restaurant, owners and managers can work with an independent agent. An independent insurance agent can check policies and rates from multiple companies.
